IDAHO GOP BILL WOULD CUT LOCAL GOVERNMENT REVENUE

AP reports a top House Republican wants to force local governments to cut their budgets when property is moved off their tax rolls or when the Legislature gives companies property tax breaks, instead of shifting the financial burden onto the backs of other taxpayers.

Majority Leader Mike Moyle’s plan to end this tax shift, introduced Friday, is already drawing criticism from minority Democrats as well as county officials because it would cut Idaho local governments’ revenue by an estimated $4.1 million annually.

Vicki McIntyre, treasurer in Ada County, the state’s most populous county, says she’s monitoring the measure’s progress out of concern that it will leave her government without sufficient revenue to provide necessary services, such as police and fire.
